First Generation Students

Student 1:

"My advice is to seek out help where you can. I was able to go abroad because Macalester advertised the Benjamin Gilman Scholarship, which funded most of my trip abroad. Also, you can take the experience at your own pace. You can find a program like DIS which gives you more hands-on support and you don’t have to spend every weekend traveling to “make the most of it.” Some of my favorite adventures were just exploring niche areas of Copenhagen and the Danish countryside "

"As someone who’d previously never left the country, being able to spend a semester abroad allowed me to introduce myself to a new cultural context. If you find the opportunity to explore both your academic interests and a new place, then a study abroad experience is definitely the way to do so"

"Some of my advice that I would give first generation students that are thinking about studying abroad is that they should look into it because it is a good way to experience being abroad but also being able to learn more about yourself and maybe also have it as a time to think on your goals such as would you like to travel later on. (which is something that I started to think about while being abroad). In addition, I can understand that sometimes financial situations will be a main factor that can help determine the ability to study abroad, but there are alot of opportunities and scholarships that can help first generation students"
